The Government has announced the appointment of Professor Brian Collins as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.


The Government has announced the appointment of Professor Brian Collins as Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.

Professor Collins' role - a new, part-time, Senior Civil Service post - will be to provide scientific advice to the Secretary of State, Ministers and the department's management board, ensuring the use of sound scientific, engineering and technological evidence across the department.

Permanent Secretary Sir Brian Bender said: "I am very pleased to welcome Professor Brian Collins to the Department. He brings an excellent academic record and extensive experience advising Government and other agencies."

Government Chief Scientific Adviser Professor John Beddington added: "This is an excellent appointment. Brian's skills and experience will allow the Department for Business to ensure its use of science is of the highest quality."

Professor Collins is also Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department for Transport; Professor of Information Systems at the Defence College of Management and Technology, Cranfield University; and advises the Home Office and other agencies on Intelligence and Counter Terrorism matters
